A New Year, A New You

Welcome to 2004!  Many people are making lists of "New Year's Resolutions": exercise, eat right, travel, get a new job, start a business, etc.  Too often, these goals quickly fall by the wayside and habits take back over. Most resolutions fail because they are actually wishes. To actually achieve the written goals, they must be specific and realistic. However, the most important factor is YOU. The word resolution comes from 'resolve' and means to make up one's mind or decide firmly. Are you really committed to making it happen? Are you prepared to overcome potential obstacles? Are you focused and ready to become educated in the area(s) you which to improve?

1st Impressions will continue to provide information in the area of professional image and etiquette development. You may wish to incorporate some of the following personal development goals into your list. In the upcoming months, tips and techniques to become skillful in these important areas will be addressed in this newsletter.
  1. Smile more.
  2. Develop charisma.
  3. Increase confidence level.
  4. Update personal image.
  5. Give more compliments.
  6. Improve vocabulary and communication skills.
  7. Initiate contact with new people. Be proactive.
  8. Remember people's names.
  9. Take more risks.
  10. Form and nurture strategic alliances.

A successful New Year’s resolution requires planning, but even the best-planned resolutions aren’t always achieved. If you start a resolution but don’t reach your goal, don’t give up. Look at what factors stopped you and incorporate this information into a new plan that may be more successful. And remember, you can make a resolution to change something in your life at any time. There’s no need to wait for a new year to pursue a new you!
