The Difference is in the Details

Take a moment a play a round of the familiar game show $10,000 Pyramid with me. The hints are: a smile, polished shoes, a firm handshake, remembering names and initiating appropriate small talk. If you guessed "things that make the difference in someone getting a job - or a date - and someone who does not", you are correct!  These are a few of the little things that are often ignored en route to a bigger goal.  However, these are the same things that can take you out of the game when competing for the same goal with someone as equally qualified as yourself. Take a time-out and consider the following questions:

* What distinguishes you as a better business owner, a more qualified job candidate, an employee deserving of a raise or, in honor of Valentine's Day, a potential love interest? There is competition all around you. What unique qualities do you consistently portray in your various roles that will make you "the chosen one"?
* Consider your appearance, your professionalism, your communication style, your level of excitement and enthusiasm (otherwise known as attitude). Are you sending the message that you are an asset…or a liability?
By doing the things most people fail to do, you are positioning yourself to outclass the competition, move ahead and maintain a position of prestige; the little things will make a big difference.
