Deference

Deference as described by Webster’s New World Dictionary is "respectful submission; acting out of regard or respect for; honor”.  When you show deference to someone you are yielding to that person out of respect for his or her position, role or age. It is an unspoken act of graciousness towards another.

In business you should show deference by:

Letting your boss and other senior management walk through a door first or enter a room first.

Allowing senior ranking executives to sit first.

Holding the door for guests and allowing them to enter first.

Standing to say hello and shake someone’s hand.

Acknowledging someone as you pass by or as they enter the room.

Giving up your seat for a senior executive.

Making sure you say someone’s name correctly, using their proper title.

Upon entering a room, you shake hands with the senior most person first.

Waiting for your host to start eating before you begin is also part of deference.

Deference is the protocol of correctly recognizing people who have earned respect; an appreciated recognition seldom verbalized, but silently acknowledged and remembered.
