Focus and Control

Do you routinely tap your fingers, pick at your clothes, play with your pen, twist your hair, fidget in your seat, or display some other nervous or annoying mannerisms? Even though these simple mannerisms appear innocent and perhaps unavoidable to you, they can leave your clients with a negative impression of you. These nervous signals give off the attitude that you’re not confident or that you don’t care. They show that you are not focused or controlled. When clients sense this, they’ll more than likely not do business with you. If you feel you must be doing something with your hands at all times, pick up a pen and take notes of what your client is saying. Note taking is a high form of flattery because it shows your clients that their words are worthy of writing down.

Your body language communicates more about you than anything you say. With controlled body language, you demonstrate your openness to others, your willingness to listen, your understanding of others and the issues at hand, and your confidence in yourself and your ability to handle situations.  Remember, focus and control, focus and control.

Quotes for the Month

I believe that we are solely responsible for our choices, and we have to accept the consequences of every deed, word, and thought throughout our lifetime.  -- Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible threads, and along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes and return to us as results.  -- Herman Melville

'Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.  -- Abraham Lincoln
