As we end another
year, let us also remember how important lasting impressions are.
You may be able to dazzle your way into someone's good graces in the
first five seconds of meeting them, but are you able to maintain
positive impressions throughout the relationship? To do so, you
must be genuine, not just exhibit learned skills well. Actions do
speak louder than words; body language can quickly override verbal
statements - we all have had customer service people tell us to "have a
nice day" without looking us in the eye and with a bland tone of voice.
Also remember that forms of communication that don't have the privilege
of visual cues (telephone and especially e-mail) are ineffective
methods of relaying emotionally charged information - several of us
have had the displeasure of being in the middle of ridiculous "e-mail
wars" as a result. 'Tis the season to be authentic and caring. Take the
time to recharge your attitude, display appropriate non-verbal cues,
and have a true desire to communicate. This will alleviate many
misunderstandings and allow your lasting impression to be calculated,
concise, and consistent with your first.
